Typical Types Found in Dumbwaiters

Dumbwaiters have been used for centuries. In old ages it was used for many purposes including secret transportation of troops and war wares between the castles. They were used to shift heavy building material at the construction sites of palaces. In modern ages the use of dumbwaiter has increased many times. Along with the other member of its family residential elevator its uses are manifold

Today there are two types of dumbwaiters available, manual and electrical dumbwaiters. The working of both the dumbwaiters is different.

Manual dumbwaiters are run by pulling the ropes. There is a pulley at top of the shaft across which ropes are fixed. These ropes are pulled down and the dumbwaiter goes upward. To keep the dumbwaiter from hitting the wall or something else during its movement, it is run on a smooth track.

This track also increases the speed of dumbwaiter. However, the speed of manual dumbwaiter is directly proportional to the speed of rope pulling. The typical capacity of dumbwaiter is from 50 to 200 pounds.

The other type of dumbwaiter is electric dumbwaiter. It is not driven manually but with the use of an electric motor. That is why, electric dumbwaiter is easier to move and handle than manual dumbwaiter.  Like manual dumbwaiter, it also has a track on which it is moved. There is no work force needed to move electric dumbwaiter as it is needed to handle manual.

The shafts used in both he dumbwaiters are same. In fact the shafts used in dumbwaiters and all home elevators are same. You can also design the dumbwaiter at your own. This is done commonly by most home owners in order to install the unique styles.
